Broken Grids: Variations on a Theme I, II & III

Students will explore creating Broken Grids using a "fence" or "plus" block. We will play with color, value, and scale, to begin building a one of a kind piece. The building blocks can be incorporated into a wall hanging that can be finished in class, or students may choose to continue building into a fuller scale project.

The Fence Quilt

Using both traditional and improvisational piecing techniques, students will explore different ways of using very similar block types to create a variety of interesting layouts. In this workshop, you will get to play with both technique and design and it is very well suited to working with scrap and up-cycled fabrics.

The Lattice Quilt

Students will play with different techniques to create a "lattice" block. Value and color play vital roles in this design, and we will analyze how fabrics interact with each other to create visual interest.

In this workshop, students will create a true “broken grid” quilt. We will discuss the use of precision piecing versus improvisation and how the two techniques can be successfully combined in one quilt.

Have you been eyeing those lovely improvisational quilts all over the internet and wondering how people do that? Or do you just want to do something to break out of a creative rut? Then try a class that’ll teach you how to piece your own improvisational split log cabin quilt. You don’t need to worry about cutting fabric the right size or sewing perfect seams. Just have fun sewing and leave with a new-found passion and a quilt top!

Improvisational Confetti Quilt Workshop

Is your scrap basket overflowing? Do you have a stash of random fabrics that you have no idea how to incorporate into a quilt? Learn how to make an improvisational confetti quilt and watch your scraps disappear! Don’t have scraps? Don’t worry, fat quarters will also work. We don’t worry about cutting fabric the right size or sewing perfect seams. This class is about having fun and making a quilt that you (and all your friends) will love!

You'll explore improvisational techniques, color play, and composition strategies, making design decisions in the moment. No two quilts will look the same!

Day 1: We'll start by creating a simple block
Day 2: Using the blocks created in day one, we'll break our blocks to create new blocks and layouts. Learn creative layout and assembly techniques.
Day 3: Finishing our tops: Experiment with layouts and borders
Day 4: Basting & Big Stitch quilting demo.

In this workshop, you’ll transform leftover bits of fabric into raw-edge patchwork, quilt it into sturdy panels, and sew a one-of-a-kind fabric basket. Perfect for organizing, a planter container, or gifting to someone special, these baskets are such a fun way to make the most of your scraps!

You’ll learn:

How to quickly turn fabric scraps into quilted patchwork
Basting and quilting techniques to add structure and texture
How to construct a fabric basket from quilted panels
Tips for resizing the pattern to create baskets into any size

You’ll leave with new sewing and quilting skills, fresh ideas for using scraps, and a unique fabric basket made by you!

Slow Stitch Patchwork Shirt

Make a beautiful patchwork shirt even if you’ve never sewn a stitch before! You’ll create a one-of-a-kind patchwork shirt by using an existing piece of clothing and hand stitching techniques to express your own style. Working with fabric scraps, you’ll learn how to build a pieced design directly onto a shirt, stitching each patch into place by hand.

This is a meditative, improvisational process—perfect for those who love visible mending, creative reuse, or simply want to slow down and make something personal.
